Don’t Like Getting Raped? Wear Clothes Of The Ideal Length
Whenever we discuss rapes in public domain, we are faced with trolls two of type — people who think rapes don’t happen in their “culture” and people who think rapes happen because we are dressed in this way not that. And they are essentially the same people.
Rape apologists are everywhere, in every culture. If you are roaming around in London chances are you will encounter a Nick Ross, who would tell you about the “provocation and contributory factors” that must be taken into account in rapes. In Missouri a Todd Akin is aware of something akin to “legitimate rape”. In Madhya Pradesh a Kailash Vijayvargiya-kind can very well educate you about the need to abide by the “Lakshmanrekha”.
So when Mad About Drama (M.A.D), a theatre group based in Kolkata, went around asking people of their city questions like “how to prevent rape?”, “who is responsible for it?” and “if they really think there’s a code of conduct that people could follow to avoid getting raped?” the answers were unsurprisingly familiar.
There were all sorts of people.
This uncle and this terrified aunty telling you, on loop:

These aunties, considerate as they are, accepting that men are “also” responsible in cases of rape against women. Also.

And these people summarising the debate by telling us the decency level of attires, or their ideal length.
